Match Unlocked Cell Phones Cellular Networks
Unlocked Cell phones have several advantages over phones that are purchased from companies that are "locked" to specific cellular network that the company uses. However, some people mistakenly believe that all unlocked phones are the same – that all work on any network. This is not true, but can be avoided with a little education and information. The basic thing you need to know is that There are two different technologies used in cellular networks in the U.S. – CDMA and GSM.
These two technologies are mutually exclusive and the phones are manufactured to work in one or the other. In other words, a phone designed for a CDMA network can not be made to work on a GSM network. Of course, the reverse true.
However, you will notice that there are only two different types of cellular network technology, but there are several cellular service providers. This is because each provider uses one of the two technologies. Thus, a phone that was originally designed to work with AT & T network can be unlocked to work on any other network, the network always works with the same technology. Since different operators offer different cellular phone models, buying a phone unlocked you can expand your options for your next phone beyond those offered by your current provider.
All you need to know when going to buy an unlocked phone is using its technology provider. You may be able to find a bargain in a Sprint used, but if you have a contract with AT & T that the phone is not helpful for you.
Then I made a little list of leading cellular operators and noted what technology they use. A quick search online will point in the direction of a more comprehensive list that addresses some of the smaller regional companies.
AT & T – GSM network
T-Mobile – GSM network
Cricket – CDMA network
U.S. Phone – CDMA network
Sprint / Nextel – CDMA network
Verizon – CDMA network
What the above list is that you can buy an unlocked phone that was originally designed for the Verizon and activate it on Sprint's network if you are a Sprint / Nextel customer.
This is really all you need to know whether to buy an unlocked cell phone. Remember limit your search to only the phones that were originally designed to operate in a network that uses the same technology in their network. Doing so will give more options than you'll get at your local store for cell phones, and probably will help you save some money.
