Omni-Availability Lifestyles of Mobile Phones (I)

One of the greatest thing mobile phones have done for us in this generation is the ability to reach and be reached by others anytime anywhere provided there is network signal coverage. This power of omni-availability through mobile phones has become what made it so popular and desirable among different age groups and social status in the society.

Omni-Availability through mobile phones has therefore conferred on us the power to be available or accessible at anytime and any place. Precisely why a person should want to be always available depends on several factors, which might be different from persons to persons. These I will mention later.

Signs of Omni-Availability?
An individual has subscribed to omni-availability through mobile phones if you notice one or more of the under mentioned factors in the mobile lifestyles of the person concerned.

Have More Than One Mobile Line
The only reason why a person will have more than one mobile line is that the person wants to reach and to be reached at all times. It is either the person has two handsets and two mobile lines that are switched on simultaneously, or the person has only one handset but two mobile lines, and alternates which line is on, depending on network availability. The norm is to have two handsets with two mobile lines of different networks. I have seen situations where a person has three handsets with three mobile lines of different networks and all of them simultaneously on.

Never Switched Off
I know some friends who switch off their mobile phones when going to bed, only to be switched on early in the morning. Many other people I know do not switch off their phones at all, unless the battery went down. The decision not to switch off your mobile line means that you want to be always available to whoever wants to reach you, even in the middle of the night. Several people I know do not mind waking up 1.00am or 2.00am to answer their phone. It is perfectly normal to them, as they have several people calling them from different countries with different time zones.

Answers All Calls
A person that wants to be always available answers all calls on his/her phone, irrespective of who is calling, the time and place of calling, Caller ID or not, or whether the person is busy or not. The bottom-line is that the person regards all calls as important and will not like to miss any call for whatever reason. This person does not screen his/her calls and instantly answers all calls as they come.

Interrupts To Answer Calls
Have you ever noticed someone who interrupts his or her discussion with you just to answer a phone call as soon as the phone started to ring? This person wants to be always available on the phone and cannot exercise restraints whenever a call comes in. These people do not mind answering calls while driving on the fast lane, without the use of a handsfree.

Returns All Missed Calls
One of the obvious signs of omni-availability is to return all missed calls whether you know the callers or not. This is because since someone was trying to reach you, the call must therefore be important. The next thing therefore is to call the person back, since you cannot afford to miss any call.

Sony Ericsson W950 Walkman

At the ongoing 3GSM Congress, Barcelona, Sony Ericsson presented another addition to its Walkman series of phones. This is the Sony Ericsson W950, a 4GB Walkman, UMTS phone. This is what I will refer to as the Mother of all Walkman phones as it beats hands down all the former Walkman phones before it.

The new Sony Ericsson W950 Walkman phone weighs about 112g and runs on Symbian 9.1 OS and UIQ 3.0 platform. It has a dimension of 106 x 54 x 15 mm and has the following features:

  • UMTS (3G) Support
  • Large 240 x 320 pixels 256k TFT Touchscreen
  • Handwriting Recognition
  • 4GB internal memory
  • FM radio with RDS
  • USB, Infrared, Bluetooth & GPRS connectivity
  • MP3/AAC/MPEG4 Player

More Than a Music Phone
Of course, the ultra-slim, ultra-stylish 3G Walkman is more than a music phone. It is capable of broadband-fast email and Web browsing and a suite of high performance entertainment applications adds to its capabilities, making it one of the highly specified phones in the Sony Ericsson portfolio.

The W950 Walkman has all the benefits of a combined phone and music player, enabling multitasking between listening to music, SMS texting, emailing and browsing the internet.

The music player within the W950 Walkman has the functionality and sound quality of a stand-alone music device. Its 4GB storage can take up to 4,000 songs and the sound quality, delivered on high quality headphones, makes listening to music a real pleasure. Besides, stereo sound through wireless headphones is now possible as W950 support bluetooth streaming in stereo.

Complete Mobile Entertainment
The Sony Ericsson W950 is a complete mobile entertainment centre that delivers great speed and exceptional quality sound and vision. Users can now enjoy the complete spectrum of mobile multimedia applications, from web browsing, push email and video streaming to 3D gaming and to store-and-share of media files. Besides music, 4GB is enough storage for a wealth of photos, videos or email attachments on the phone.

The Sony Ericsson W950 Walkman is going to be a serious competitor to the Nokia N91, another similar device with 4GB storage from Nokia. With the success of Sony Ericsson in the Walkman series, it is a sure bet that it will ultimately win the market.

The Sony Ericsson Walkman W950 will be commercially available from the third quarter of 2006.

Comments
It is a pity again that Sony Ericsson removed camera from the W950 Walkman. A great 3G phone of such high specification is supposed to be complete with a camera. On the other side, a camera will distract from the music functionality of the phone and makes it more expensive.

The W950 Walkman is an excellent phone from Sony Ericsson that will appeal to all music aficionados all over the world. This is a device I cannot wait to get my hands on, as a 4GB storage is more than enough to carry all my music with me. All I can say for now is “Bravo, Sony Ericsson”.

Sony Ericsson M600 3G Communicator

Print This Article | Email This Article

Just last week Sony Ericsson announced a new phone, Sony Ericsson M600 3G Communicator, which is a scaled down version of the Sony Ericsson P990 model. In an attempt to make it a typical business phone, Sony Ericsson stripped the M600 of camera, Wi-Fi and FM Radio.

The new tri-band Sony Ericsson M600, which is specifically designed for email handling, has the following features:

  • Weight: 112g
  • Dimensions: 107 x 57 x 15 mm
  • UMTS (3G) Support
  • Large 240 x 320 pixels 256k TFT Touchscreen
  • Handwriting Recognition
  • QWERTY Keyboard
  • Multi tasking Symbian OS 9.1 with UIQ 3.0
  • 80MB free user memory
  • 64MB Memory Stick Micro (M2) included
  • USB, Infrared, Bluetooth & GPRS connectivity

Other features include: - RSS feeds support - Powerpoint, Word and Excel editors, and a PDF viewer - Several email clients can be installed on the phone - Opera 8 web browser installed - Audio/video streaming - MP3 / AAC / AAC+ E-AAC+ formats supported - Certicom VPN client for access to corporate networks - Mc Afee Antivirus & Firewall software (Try & Buy)

The Sony Ericsson M600 is a fully-specified email tool and mobile phone rolled into an extremely stylish, slim device with touch screen and handwriting recognition. The software platform and user interface, make multitasking like browsing the internet while making a voice call, a reality.

The Sony Ericsson M600 takes full advantage of its UMTS capabilities with fast and easy email handling (even with large attachments) and high bandwidth multimedia downloads. This is in addition with document handling with Powerpoint, Word and Excel and an Adobe PDF viewer.

The Sony Ericsson M600 phone is expected to be commercially available from the second quarter of 2006.

Thumb-Up of the M600
-This phone will find great popularity in the business world because of its full email support together with its lightness and slimness.

-The absence of camera will make it to be welcomed in organisations where camera phones are barred or frowned upon. A business phone does not need a radio either.

Thumb-Down of the M600
-A business phone without a Wi-Fi? This deliberate omission from Sony Ericsson seems unforgivable.

-A 3G phone without a camera? A 3G phone is expected to have a camera for recording videos.

-A 3G calculator? Due to the slimness and shape of the phone, it looks more like a calculator with a phone function, at a first glance.

Comments
As this phone is a scaled down version of the Sony Ericsson P990, the absence of a Wi-Fi, camera and Fm Stereo are understandable. In order to reduce the size of the phone, some features have to be sacrificed. If Wi-Fi and camera is necessary, then the Sony Ericsson P990 will certainly have the day.

I do not expect this phone to be popular among the teenagers as Sony Ericsson had wisely removed the camera and radio functions from the phone. I assure you that you will only find this compact and slim, stylish beautiful 3G phone with mature business users, which is the original intended target.
